My research lies at the intersection of urban studies, migration, and spatial justice, with a particular focus on how crises shape urban environments and social relations. I examine the governmentalities of crises, legal geographies of (un)safety, and the contradictions of international rights. This work has led to projects on the discursive constructions of the Global South and the contestation of urban commons in Southern European cities.
Dr. Joris Schapendonk
Associate Professor Radboud University Nijmegen
My research is best positioned at the intersection of migration studies, mobility studies, and border studies, with a focus on how migration trajectories from Africa are facilitated and shaped. In collaboration with many, I am developing a ‘reflexive mobility approach’ that seeks to understand how the condition of being a migrant is constructed — that is, how certain categories are formed, brought to life, and resisted.
Dr. Peter Teunissen
Gerda Henkel Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Bern
My research focuses on migration industries, infrastructures, and b/ordered mobilities. My PhD research focused on the Evros/Meriç River, investigating how its historical and imperial legacies have shaped contemporary mobility regimes. By examining the interplay between historical contexts and modern border practices, my research contributes to broader debates on how nature and infrastructures shape border landscapes and influence the experiences of people-on-the-move.
